Along with Zacatecas and San Luis Potosí, Guanajuato was one of the most important silver cities in Mexico.

Many tourists and local residents consider this colonial city to be the most beautiful in Mexico.

Fascinated by the romance of the past, Guanajuato invariably makes a strong impression on visitors. The historical center of the city was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988.

La Valenciana

The most important of the mountain complexes of Guanajuato is the mine of La Valenciana. It is located on the northern outskirts of the city. The mine started to be valued for its silver in 1774. From then, until the beginning of the 19th century, La Valenciana was considered as one of the most productive silver mines in the world. The mine still produces silver, gold, nickel and lead to this day.

The Lane of kisses

The famous German explorer and traveler Alexander Humboldt called Guanajuato “the city of lovers” after visiting the Lane of Kisses (El Callejón del Beso). It is one of the most famous lanes of Mexico and a popular tourist attraction of Guanajuato.

The International Festival of Cervantino

For the first time, the festival was held in 1972. The Cervantino International Festival marked the beginning of the tradition of honoring the works of Miguel de Cervantes, the author of the world famous novel “Don Quijote”.

At the time of the festival, the streets of the city turn into stages, the participants rehearse in front of passers-by, music is heard everywhere (even from the underground streets), artists please residents and tourists of the city with songs, dances and theatrical performances. In total, more than 2000 artists from 25 countries take part in this festival and it all lasts for almost three weeks (from 3 to 21 October).

The Museum of mummies

The most famous tourist attraction of Guanajuato is the Mummies Museum (Museo de los Momias). This is the only museum in the world which stores human bodies that have been naturally mummified. Researchers believe that the mineral composition of the soil and the dry atmosphere created the ideal conditions for mummification. Every year the museum is visited by hundreds of thousands of tourists.

Callejoneada

While visiting Guanajuato, take the opportunity to take part in the traditional Callejoneada – a colorful folklore event held on the streets of the city by students, studying in the local university. Many people associate Guanajuato with these traditional evening processions. Tourists and local residents are actively watching this show.

Alhondiga de Granaditas

The unattractive building of Alhondiga de Granaditas served as a barn, fortress, prison, and has now become the Museum of the Mexican War of Independence. Alhondiga de Granaditas became the site of the first major battle of the beginning of the Mexican Revolution.
