The Spanish city of Setenil de las Bodegas is perhaps one of the most amazing corners of Andalusia. Its main attraction is the formidable arches of rock overhanging the houses and streets of the whole city. The first thought arising afrer looking at such a natural building: “What if it collapses one day?”But the history of Setenil de las Bodegas calms down all people coming here – basalt cliffs have stood unchanged for several million years, and the town hides itself in the rock for more than eight centuries (although, according to some sources, people live here for 25,000 years).
Setenil de las Bodegas is one of the most amazing “white towns” of the south of Spain. It is a small, typically Andalusian town with a population of 2,967 inhabitants (according to the 2010 census), occupying an area of 82 sq.km.
Setenil de las Bodegas has long been famous for its unique geographical location: most houses are literally cut into rocks, built by expanding natural caves. The city is so skilfully built up between the rocks that it seems to be a fancy sculpture invented by some dreamer architect.
Historical evidence indicates that Setenil de las Bodegas is an ancient settlement. Its inhabitants were famous for their military courage, they steadfastly protected their city from numerous attacks by Roman soldiers, who in the 1st century BC managed to enter the city only after a 15-day siege.
Scientists believe that the etymology of the name “Setenil” is connected with military events: this word originated from septem nihil, which literally means “seven times without result”. This was the number of unsuccessfully done by the Romans attacks, during which the inhabitants of the city managed to survive.
The second part of the name – “de las Bodegas” – appeared later, thanks to the abundant production of valuable varieties of wine, which are still famous here. It is noteworthy that the first vineyards were planted on this territory by Christians in addition to the olive and almond groves that still grew here.
Over the past centuries, Setenil has also become famous for its meat products, especially chorizo and cherdo sausages, which are made from pork. Hundreds of pigs in huge quantities graze on the surrounding hills of the city. In addition to meat, the city is also known for its baked goods, especially biscuits.
The rock defended the local inhabitants in ancient times, and protects them still today: in winter – from the strong winds, and in summer – from the scorching heat. But during summer time it is always a comfortable temperature in the streets of Setenil de las Bodegas. So, air conditioners are not in a big demand here.
