Ahu Tongariki Moais

Mystery of Easter Island. Let’s get to know it!

Easter Island is a small, hilly and now with no trees territory of volcanic origin. It is one of the most isolated islands in the world, so it isn’t the easiest place to reach.Papa Nui (another name for Easter Island) is relatively small, so it is possible to get around fairly easily, even though public transportation is not available.

That of course is except for taxis, which are plentiful and very cheap. Easter Island has an incredible amount of beautiful and interesting places to visit.

Moais of Ahu Tongariki on Easter Island

The biggest tourist attractions on Easter Island are the statues standing upon ceremonial platforms called Ahu. The islanders call them “Moai”, and they have puzzled ethnographers, archaeologists, and visitors to the island since the first European explorers arrived here in 1722.

They stand with their backs to the sea and most archaeologists believe that they represent the spirits of ancestors, chiefs, or other high-ranking males who held important positions in the history of Easter Island, or Papa Nui, the name given by the indigenous people to their island in the 1860s.

Each statue was different from the others and had distinctive features that made it possible to identify it with the ancestor it symbolized. Each one had a name of its own, and sometimes they were painted. It is also possible that they had a defined gender. The size and design of the statues of Easter Island evolved dramatically over time.

This setting and the 887 Moai have turned much of Rapa Nui into a Unesco World Heritage Site and a tourism magnet.

Two other exceptional places on the island are the volcanic craters of Rano Kau and Rano Raraku. The slightly inland quarry at “Rano Raraku” is where the majority of Moais were created, on a hillside.

Similarly, Rano Kau is the remains of a volcanic cinder cone which, like Rano Raraku, is filled with fresh rainwater and has a mottled unearthly appearance that is breathtaking.
