The blue city!

In Morocco, the City of Chefchaouen is located 40 miles (60 KM) south of Tetouan. Chefchaouen has a history of Spanish-influence and is located in the heart of the Rif Mountains, where surrounding trees, hills, springs, and wildflowers attract tourists looking for a calm getaway. Just a few hours away from Tangier, or the Imperial cities of Rabat, Meknes, and Fez, Chefchaouen offers the nature lover rows of hills perfect for hiking and outdoor activities.chefchaouen-morocco-21In this Moroccan town, dubbed “the Blue City”, the Berber mountain people of Morocco have a lot to offer tourists. Their hand-woven earth-tone blankets, rugs, and even lamp shades are seen displayed at the small shops within the city’s medina walls. They will welcome you in, ask you to look around, and even offer you some mint tea without hassling you to buy.

We are a couple in our mid-20s who stayed here for 2nights. The riad itself is a lovely blue color as is the whole Chaouen medina. Provides a very serene feeling. The terrace on which we had breakfast was absolutely fantastic- beautiful views of the Rif mountains and cute rooftops.

7146396215_7f8577df26_hAs Chaouen is not bustling at night, it was so nice to sit here in the evenings as well. Begonia, the manager of the riad who speaks English pretty well, was helpful and addressed any questions that we had regarding sightseeing and transport to Fes. Would recommend based on nice location and accomodating staff.

Just a tip: inquired riad about transport from Tangier to Chaouen and were told their private pick-up is a fixed price of 55euro. We opted to take our chances and were easily able to negotiate in English and some broken Spanish on a private grand taxi to the medina door for 40euro. 8856818354_706c41d1f1_bYou could probably get it even a bit lower if you are willing to bargain for longer.

The reason why I love Chefchaouen so much? It’s the most peaceful Moroccan city I’ve ever visited so far. Other than the persistent kief (cannabis) salesmen, all Moroccan inhabitants of this town are friendly towards tourists and would never think of pulling the schemes that are common in Fez and Marrakech.
