Valentine’s Day is coming soon. The stores are already selling chocolates in the form of hearts and valentines. For many countries, the ritual of Valentine’s Day is quite typical, but there are exceptions in some countries.

Denmark

In Denmark, they have a particular attitude towards flowers. On Valentine’s Day in Denmark men give their sweethearts snowdrops. And, instead of valentines, they give women the so called gaekkebrev – humorous letters with some funny poems inside.

France

Paris is considered as one of the most romantic cities in the world. It is said that the first valentine postcard was sent in France, when the Duke of Orleans, while being imprisoned, sent love letters to his wife.

On Valentine’s Day the «Une Loterie dAmour» parade is being held. All single people go out in the streets, stop at each house and shout loudly “Be my Valentine”. And if they hear any respond to the offer, it is possible that a new couple will be born soon.

Wales

The Welsh do not celebrate Valentine’s Day. But they have the Holy Dwynwen day – a patron saint of all lovers. The holiday is celebrated on the 25th of January.

The traditional romantic gift for this holiday is a carved spoon with a pattern which bears a certain value. For example, the pattern of the key symbolizes the key to a man’s heart.

China

China also celebrates the analogue of Valentine’s Day and this holiday is called the Qixi Festival. Girls cut down different pictures on watermelons and melons and make a wish to get married successfully.

England

On the eve of this holiday, the British women put five bay leaves on the pillow – one leaf in each corner and one in the middle, wishing to get married this year. Leaves are usually moistened with rose water.
